These are some of the most frequent questions asked when selling
at one of our local farmers' markets.
1. Where are you from?
We are from Linden, Ca., ½ hr east of Stockon on your way
to Lake Tahoe. About the same latitude as San Franciso but 2 hrs
inland from there.
2. How do you bring your produce down to San Diego?
We package it and ship it weekly or daily depending on the season
to our refrigerated warehouse in San Diego. From there we distribute
to the various Farmers' Markets or ship direct internationally.
3. How is your produce farmed?
This question is answered in our "Farming Practices" sections
of our website.
4. Why is grocery store quality fruit frequently have that "mealy"
or "pithy" taste to their fruit?
Grocery have consolidated, causing most chains to be huge corporations
with layers of necessary beauracratic protocol. In the produce departments
of these stores that can be a major problem. Produce needs to be
consumed as soon as possible from the time it is picked. The longer
it is stored the greater the chance that "pithy", soft
texture will develop, because the fruit has extended its cycle of
freshness. With these corporate stores, they have one central buyer
for each region buying huge quantities of produce to ensure they
get the cheapest price. This produce can sit for weeks in their
central warehouses before every reaching the individual stores.
The produce is often sealed with a wax so exterior decay to the
fruit is unlikely to occur. It can be stored for months without
any apparent damage to the exterior part of the fruit. However,
its only after you have purchased it and taken a bite will you be
able to detect you got a real "lemon" instead of the fresh
peach you had anticipated.
5. Why is your fruit fresher?
It's self explanatory. When dealing straight with the grower which
is involved with the process of production all the way through the
retail exchange the chance of you receiving fruit that is of high
quality increases dramatically.
6. What's the difference between a pink lady apple and a fuji
apple or what's a pluot
