Our Farm
Smit Orchards is located in Linden, California, about 30 minutes east of Stockton Ca., on your way through the foothills going towards Lake Tahoe. Smit Orchards was established in 1969 by the Smit Family. John Smit emigrated from the Netherlands to Northern California in hopes of starting a dairy. In America, he met his bride, Clazien, also from the Netherlands and they both established a dairy ranch. After primarily raising cows and corn John Smit soon got wind of a new apple that would be conducive to grow in the region, the Fuji apple. They proceeded to transform the property from pasture lands to rows and rows of fruit trees. The Smit Family continued to add a wide variety of apples, table grapes, cherries and stone fruit to their orchards. The Smit Family is now beginning to farm blueberries and pomegranates as well.
Smit Orchards has been successful by focus on growing high quality organic fruit. Going for quality over quantity has helped create a reliable brand of fruit that is always in demand. Smit Orchards is still run by family and plans on continuing to do so. The Smits are committed to “sustainable” farming practices that will allow the soils and those tilling them to coexist in the most natural environment possible. Most of our orchards are certified organic by the CCOF and registered with the California Dept of Food and AG (CDFA) as organic. Smit Orchards still attend several farmers’ markets in various areas of California. We hope to see you there.

Size Doesn’t Matter. Large, picture-perfect fruit does not necessarily mean great flavor. When we select your fruit from the orchard, we go by taste, not by size or appearance. Our fruit may sometimes be a bit smaller or less shiny, but it will taste better.Natural Sugar Content Determines the Taste. The higher the natural sugar content, the better the fruit tastes – it’s that simple. We search for fruit with the most natural sugar content so it tastes great.
Vine-Ripened is Better. Grocery store fruit gets picked while it is still green. This extends the shelf life for weeks, but much of the natural flavor gets lost in the process. Our fruit is vine-ripened and arrives at your office ready to eat. It will remain fresh for several days and then begin to over-ripen. To slow down the ripening process and extend the life of your vine-ripened fruit, place it in a refrigerator upon arrival.
Fresh Fruit is Good for You. Fresh fruit contains vitamins, minerals, fiber and other essential elements the body needs. It is also high in anti-oxidants, which help to fight cancer and delay the aging process. Fruit can also lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels as well as reduce the risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, heart disease, stroke and cancers!
Fresh Fruit Makes You Feel Great! Sucrose, the refined sugar in snacks and candies, is highly glycemic. It goes straight into the bloodstream and overloads the body with too much sugar. It then wears off quickly, causing a blood sugar “crash” that leads to low energy and mental fatigue. Fresh fruit contains fructose, a natural sugar with a low glycemic index. Fructose allows your body to process the sugar slowly and convert it into sustained energy rather than storing it as fat. With fresh fruit, you feel great and have more energy.
Rinse Your Fruit. Always rinse your fruit in cold water before eating it. This will remove any dirt or dust particles and add a touch of crispness to the skin.
